One of the real stars of the Tour of Utah always seems to be the scenery, and this year will only re-emphasize that fact. As in years past, the Tour of Utah peloton will traverse a variety of Utah’s distinct climate and environmental regions that are unmatched anywhere in the world. Riders will find themselves pedaling over mountain passes in the shadow of the some of the highest peaks in the Wasatch Mountains; climbing high into the alpine regions that still—even in early August—continue to hold snow; and racing through the cities and towns that make Utah so spectacularly diverse. The race will start and finish in places such as Salt Lake City, Ogden, Lehi, and Park City, and travel through the many towns of Summit, Wasatch, Morgan, Weber, and Utah counties.
The 2012 event will announce details of each stage in the spring, but promises to uphold its reputation as “America’s Toughest Stage Race” by incorporating epic climbs and stunning scenery along the mountains, valleys, and vibrant communities of northern Utah.
This year's overall start will be hosted by Ogden which has been a host city for the Tour the past four years. Teams, coaches, media and event staff will spend several days in Ogden prior to the start preparing for America’s Toughest Stage Race.
The Team Time Trial is one of the most unique events in competitive cycling, and will be held for the first time at the 2012 Tour of Utah. This technical discipline will be hosted on the second day of the Tour at Miller Motorsports Park, which is hosting a time trial for a fifth consecutive year.
Salt Lake City will host finish lines for Stages Three and Four in 2012. It is the fifth year that the capital of Utah will entertain huge crowds for this international event. The finish area for Thursday’s road race will be at University of Utah Research Park, where Stage One finished in 2010.
The Utah Valley has hosted the Tour of Utah every year since it began as a three-day Thanksgiving Point Stage Race & Cycling Festival over Memorial Day weekend in 2004. Last year the race started in the northern part of Utah County and wound its way around Utah Lake for a finish overlooking Mt. Timpanogos in Provo.
The Queen Stage of the Tour of Utah returns to Saturday this year, challenging pro peloton to one of the most classic climbing days in U.S. cycling. This legendary Utah route begins in Park City and includes climbs past Robert Redford's Sundance resort under the summit of Mt. Timpanogos to the punishing ascent along Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.
Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is as famous for its grueling climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon for cyclists as it is for its world-famous powder for skiers. The Tour returns for a fifth consecutive year for the Queen Stage of the week, a 100-plus mile road race with close to 12,000 feet of climbing.
